Title:   Click (2006) Date:   April 22, 2007
Genre:   Comedy Format: STZ Rating:   Bad
Comments:

Completely predictable from beginning to end, Click has a few funny moments but was essentially not worth the time. This did not come as a big surprise to me since I am not really an Adam Sandler fan. David Hasselhoff's performance was surprisingly funny, though.

Title:   Farce of the Penguins (2007) Date:   April 22, 2007
Genre:   Comedy Format: DVD Rating:   Horrible!
Comments:

My first one star movie of 2007! I couldn't even watch the whole thing... I turned it off after 30 minutes. With voice talent from Sam Jackson, Lewis Black, Whoopi Goldberg, James Belushi, Jason Alexander and many more talented comic actors, I was expecting a whole lot more. Of course, it was written & directed by Bob Saget which should have been a big red flag! "Cult classic" my ass! This movie will never be a cult classic. It wasn't even a little bit funny.

Title:   The Island (2005) Date:   April 16, 2007
Genre:   Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller Format: HBO Rating:   Good
Comments:

This action packed sci-fi adventure from director Michael Bay (Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) probes questions surrounding the ethics of human cloning. The action has Bay's distinct signature and is well worth the price of admission. The story, however, leaves a lot of untapped potential from the sociopolitical angle, there are a number of holes in the plot and the acting could have been stronger.

Title:   Fuck: A Documentary (2005) In DVD Collection Date:   April 13, 2007
Genre:   Documentary Format: DVD Rating:   Awesome!
Comments:

Come on folks... it's just a word!
How did such a simple one syllable word attain such power in our society? Honestly, no one really knows. And guess what... chances are that what you believe about the origin of this word is complete urban myth. Check out this excellent and funny documentary if you want to learn more.

Title:   THX 1138 (1971) In DVD Collection Date:   April 11, 2007
Genre:   Sci-Fi Format: DVD Rating:   Awesome!
Comments:

Wow! As a die hard sci-fi buff, I can't believe how long it took me to see this film! I guess I put it off because of the hype... George Lucas' first film and all.
This film was way ahead of its time. THX 1138 is a visually stunning film with a strong script that stands the test of time.

Title:   The Prestige (2006) Date:   April 4, 2007
Genre:   Suspense/Thriller Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:

An engaging suspense-thriller about a couple of competing magicians in turn-of-the-century England. Directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins) with the same visual style as his other films, The Prestige grabs your attention from the first scene. Nolan's style combined with great storytelling and some fine acting by Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and David Bowie creates a film well worth seeing.

Title:   Children of Men (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   March 27, 2007
Genre:   Sci-Fi/Action/Thriller Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   This is my favorite kind of Sci-Fi film: a realistic story about the not too distant future that poses more questions than it answers. If you like thought provoking science fiction then this film is for you.

Title:   Color Me Kubrick: A True...ish Story (2005) Date:   March 26, 2007
Genre:   Comedy/Biography Format: HDNM Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   John Malkovich is such a great actor and he is awesome in this film. It is the amazing true(ish) story of a man going around impersonating Stanley Kubrick and reaping financial and sexual benefits. Malkovich's range as an actor is fully showcased in this film.

Title:   Heaven's Prisoners (1996) Date:   March 26, 2007
Genre:   Mystery/Drama Format: HDNM Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   A gritty, engaging crime drama set in New Orleans with solid performances by Teri Hatcher, Alec Baldwin and Eric Roberts. Boy, did Teri Hatcher look great before all the plastic surgery! The story unfolds smoothly with the action very naturally disbursed throughout. The film will hold your attention from start to finish. My only complaint: Alec Baldwin's southern accent sounds forced and unnatural.

Title:   The Illusionist (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   March 11, 2007
Genre:   Suspense/Thriller Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   A very cool story and some great acting by Ed Norton. While you may figure out parts of the twist ending, you will likely not figure it all the first time. I look forward to my next viewing to see if I can find clues that I missed the first time around.

Title:   Ghosts of Abu Ghraib (2007) In DVD Collection Date:   March 6, 2007
Genre:   Documentary Format: HBO Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   An powerful documentary that gives a whole new perspective on the Abu Ghraib scandal. Includes interviews with Iraqi victims, military brass and MP's who worked at the prison. You will sympathize with the MP's and want to see Bush's, Cheny's & Rumsfeld's heads on a platter. It is scandalous that this atrocity happened and the people who are truly accountable for it remain unpunished.

Title:   This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   March 6, 2007
Genre:   Documentary Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   If you are a fan of movies you must see this film. The inner workings of the MPAA ratings board are hard to believe. Did you know that the members of the board are a closely guarded secret? And, get this... a Roman Catholic priest and a Protestant minister sit on the appeals board!

Title:   Running With Scissors (2006) Date:   February 27, 2007
Genre:   Comedy/Drama Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   An amusing, emotional and poignant story about a young man with an alcoholic father and a pill popping mother. His mother gives him away to her therapist where he lives in a bizarre house with equally bizarre people. A fun and moving story of personal triumph made all that more amazing because it is true. An excellent performance by Annette Benning.

Title:   My Big Fat Independent Movie (2005) Date:   February 22, 2007
Genre:   Comedy Format: SHO Rating:   Good
Comments:   A spoof of indie films that is probably a lot funnier if you've seen all of the films that are being spoofed.

Title:   Jet Li's Fearless (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   February 20, 2007
Genre:   Martial Arts/Action Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   Another excellent Jet Li martial arts film. Masterful direction by Ronny Yu with beautiful fight choreography by Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix trilogy & Kill Bill, Vols. 1 & 2) make this film a real visual pleasure. If you are a Jet Li fan, be sure and see this one. It is Jet Li's last film.

Title:   Idiocracy (2006) Date:   February 14, 2007
Genre:   Comedy Format: DVD Rating:   Bad
Comments:   Written and directed by Mike Judge (Office Space), I was expecting a real social commentary. Instead I was presented with a series of stupid jokes and contrived slapstick. Don't waste your time with this one.

Title:   The O Tapes (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   February 8, 2007
Genre:   Documentary Format: HBO Rating:   Awesome!
Comments:   A phenomenal documentary on the female orgasm. Both men and women can improve their sex lives by watching this film!

Title:   King Kong (2005) Date:   February 6, 2007
Genre:   Action/Drama Format: HBO Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   A very well done update of a classic film. Directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), the film has a similar visual feel to LOTR (especially the scenes on Skull Island). The story drags at some points. At two and a half hours, I think Jackson was going for the epic quality of LOTR, without success. It is still a good film and worth seeing.

Title:   Fantastic Four (2005) Date:   February 4, 2007
Genre:   Action Format: HBO Rating:   Bad
Comments:   Jessica Alba (Sin City, Dark Angel) is her incredible hot self but this movie is pure cheese. Completely predictable from beginning to end, this film seems to be just another attempt to milk some money out of a comic book franchise. And, sadly, a sequel is in the works.

Title:   Elektra (2005) Date:   January 26, 2007
Genre:   Action Format: HBO Rating:   Good
Comments:   A visually stunning, action packed, film adaptation of a comic book. Jennifer Garner's (Alias, Daredevil) martial arts scenes were a pleasure to watch. The story is not deep but the action is fun and the plot holds together well. If you're a fan of martial arts action moves, check this one out.

Title:   Vulgar (2000) Date:   January 21, 2007
Genre:   Comedy/Drama Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   Produced by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier (Clerks, Dogma) and starring Brian O'Halloran (Dante in Clerks) this film lives up to it's title. It is the disturbing story of a loser who performs as a clown for children's birthday parties. He has a big idea to start performing at bachelor parties believing this will bring him fame and fortune. Not so... On his first attempt as a bachelor party clown he is violently raped by his client. While the film is dark and disturbing, it is well written and well acted and totally worth watching.

Title:   Ultraviolet (2006) Date:   January 19, 2007
Genre:   Sci-Fi/Action Format: STZ Rating:   Good
Comments:   Milla Jovovich is HOT! There, I've said it. It had to be said. She was the best part of The Fifth Element too! Ultraviolet is a futuristic, sci-fi twist on the vampire movie. It's an interesting story with some cool visual effects. Ultraviolet is fast paced and action packed. It's not a great movie but if you like Action/Sci-Fi/ Vampire movies you won't be disappointed. And, well, Milla is HOT!

Title:   Lady In the Water (2006) Date:   January 17, 2007
Genre:   Suspense/Thriller Format: DVD Rating:   Good
Comments:   Lady in the Water is M. Night Shyamalan's fifth movie. I don't think it's fair to compare every movie he makes to The Sixth Sense but I do go into each new one with high expectations. This was a visually stunning film with some real suspense but I found it a bit confusing at times. It felt like Shyamalan was trying too hard. If you're a Shyamalan fan, see this movie, otherwise pass.

Title:   Over the Hedge (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   January 14, 2007
Genre:   Comedy Format: DVD Rating:   Good
Comments:   A very amusing animated comedy with a message about suburban sprawl. Not a movie for young kids, though, since it is basically the story of a homeowner on a mission to kill the animals.

Title:   Who Killed the Electric Car (2006) In DVD Collection Date:   January 9, 2007
Genre:   Documentary Format: DVD Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   A fascinating documentary on one of the earliest electric cars and the politics behind its demise. A lot of myths about electric cars have been propagated by the government and the oil lobby (poor battery life, poor performance, short range - ALL FALSE!). The EV1 by GM was an incredible car that to this day has a devoted following. We can thank US energy policy and the powerful oil lobby for the EV1's untimely death. To learn more click here and see this film.

Title:   The Good Shepherd (2006) Date:   January 5, 2007
Genre:   Action/Drama Format: Theater Rating:   Excellent
Comments:   This is supposed to be the story of the birth of the CIA but I have to ask myself: can we ever really know the truth behind the birth of an agency as shrouded in secrecy as the CIA? Probably not, but this is an excellent story, very well told and acted. It drags a bit in some spots but the story holds together so well that you barely notice.

Good Good - An average film with some minor flaws. I only need to see these once.
